He had to go into hibernation because humans accidentally sealed the entrance to his resting place one day, so he couldn't get out any more. Until one fateful day when a lovely archeologist stumbled upon his coffin in a sealed off crypt.
One thing to keep in mind if you have your vampire go this route, in every story, movie, ect. Whenever a vampire has been in hibernation for a very long time, they are not thinking, but are needing to quench their thirst/hunger. So most likely the poor sap who opens/unlocks the crypt will most likely be dinner, and not someone who survives this encounter.
Yes, he's probably very hungry but happy to escape. He woke up when he heard movement outside his coffin, and he transformed into a bat and flew away as soon as the lid was opened. The humans were only slightly spooked.
