No, cakes don't work on elders. Without the cheat code, get them to jog and never sleep. Take away any reward traits that may be prolonging them like "Neverweary" with a potion bought in rewards store. There is one that resets traits I think.
The most "painless" death though is elder exhaustion.
Another way is get them hysterical with laughter. Then they laugh to death. Seriously, I've tested it and it works!
