Being in a flirty mood helps, but I think the most important thing is to pay attention to the direction that the conversation is going in.
If the conversation goes from casual to awkward (it can do this even if your last interaction was successful), then you should go back to friendly interactions until it goes back to casual, or even better, pleasant.
Same thing if you do a romantic interaction and you notice that it goes down from suggestive conversation to casual discussion. That means you should go back to friendly interactions until the conversation is pleasant again, and then switch back to romantic ones.
Also, never do your flirting in a group conversation. Romantic interactions ALWAYS make the conversation turn awkward in a group conversation (I guess to be more realistic?)
