I hate active careers! My sims might want to "be a detective" (as part of a storyline I'm creating) or "become a doctor" (again as part of their story) but that doesn't mean that I want to do those things.
What I would like most would be "rabbit hole" careers that still give me a few choices to make. I don't want a scripted list of "do this" and "do that" goals, but options -- just as we have choices about "working hard", "schmoozing with boss", and so on. I'd like more of that, with "chance cards" that are career-oriented and which make an actual difference in the lives of the sims. In Sims 2, it was quite possible to get fired from a job -- or demoted -- if you chose the wrong answer on a chance card. I want some control of how my sims perform on the job but not the tedious, meaningless boredom of following a specific list of goals that are the same for each sim entering that career.
I also like the requirements and the daily tasks, although I think some are a bit strenuous or take a little too long to complete.
Most of all, I just want more career paths, and more choices, with more realistic job titles. I want teachers, I want truck drivers, I want secretaries, I want nurses, I want car salesmen. I'd like to see the old "Slacker" career again. Of course, I can -- and do -- create all these things through my imagination, but I would love to see them implemented in the game.
Oh, and bankers! I really wish we had some sort of financial pack where individual sims could have accounts -- instead of all of the family's money being in one pool. I want sims to be able to gamble, take out loans to buy businesses or to pay for vacations, and do more investing in the stock market.
I'm essentially a realistic-style player, so I want all the realism I can get. Active careers might seem "realistic" but they're not. I can create much stronger realism by using my imagination than by having "goals" spelled out in the game.
EDIT: Typo!
