I prefer a combo, but if I had to choose just one, it would be freelance.
The way this iteration is set up active careers are the worst to me unless I am playing a single Sim. I don't like how we have to choose which Sim to play and ignore the others.
A combo is great when playing families. Sending one parent off to a rabbit hole, while the other parent has the freedom to work (freelance of WFH) while taking care of children at home. Of course, leaving the lot for some of the tasks in the home based careers does require a little manipulation, it's still pretty easy to accomplish.
