Actual Maximum Sim Count in a game?

Hi all,

I guess I start this thread because I am really not sure what is the actual maximum sim count a game can have as of now? Perhaps a simguru can enlighten me?

So, I set my game to Unlimited sim count with 385 active sims under My Households and several hundreds (between 200 to 300) more under Other Households.  My active households are all over the sim world.

Recently I notice that new townies no longer spawn and if they do, they will be removed from the game on the next sim day.

So these are the 2 questions:

1, Does anyone know what is the actual maximum sim count for unlimited? From what I read in forums the number range between 500 to 800 but I am not really sure.

2. Does the game remove townies if the sim count exceed the limit?

    Interesting question.

There is an hidden actual sim limit that counts all sims. It increases after each DLC release, so last I heard of it during Cats and Dogs time, it was somewhere over 800 Now it's definitely over 2,000...

The sim limit you see on Manage Households only counts sims you have in My Households section. These sims will not be culled if the actual limit is full. The game culls sims in Other Households section, housed or not. In addition, if a friend is about to be culled, they'll call your sim and tell them they're going off-the-grid and will be thinking about your sim as they're foraging through the forest. More about culling here.

Unlimited should really be unlimited. But the way you are telling that new townies generated immediately get culled the next day is... interesting... 385 should be far from the limit (and even I at about 1,000 sims have Other Households)... How many households do you have in Other Households section?

Hi. Thanks for the reply. From the looks of it, you have wayyyy more sims that me but yet you don't seem to have any culling issue?

I have 2 suspects (no real known cause) because there is no way to count sims in Other Households:

      1. A mod to add more sims in a venue could be the culprit.
      2. Somehow I have accidentally removed No Culling Mod from my mods folder.

I have tested 2-3 sim day and the culling seems to stop for now. I still need to observe for few more times.

        Interesting...

I use no mods myself, so that's one thing...

Question 2: I know the game culls townies if you exceed your specified limit (mine's usually 200). It's likely that the same thing happens if you exceed your unofficial limit when you set it to unlimited.

I can't answer question 1, but it's possible that there isn't one limit that applies to all saves for all players. Other factors affecting the save might cause the unofficial limit to be higher or lower.

For Question 2, i am not sure what is my sim count under Other Households. There is no way to verify them.

That said, if you are right about the limit 200 then I think it's time for Devs to update the max sim count as Sims 4 is expected to have more contents and expansion packs. It is ridiculous to stick to old limits while the game have ~20 worlds (or somewhere there)

**Btw I have been playing Sims 4 since 2014 and the sims limit frustrates me.

I play at the recommended 200, but that's for played and unplayed sims. The most total sims, townies included, I've had were 396.

  • My sim count is about 750, it probably includes horses and pets. I never had a played house culled, but I would not know if NPCs are no longer around. I have enough not-played own sims to cover up for them.

I'm pretty sure that device specs will have a word in this. My computer is low-end but I think it helps that my driver has 2-300 GB free space. Best advice, back up regularly :)

I have allways 150 sims, not maximum 200, but normally I only have, parents, maybe grandparents, if I can bother, and about three children, but now with Grim-event I will get five or more children. Does anyone know if social-services can take your children away?

Aramezrasocial services can take away preteens, but not teens. They take the child away if their hunger drops dangerously low, or if they get bad grades. Social services will also take children away if all of the adults in the house die.

With that many sims, does your PC lag? Just wondering.

Yes yes yes :) But I can live with it. It's worse right after entering a lot for the first time. It's worst for the first sim minutes though, if I play the same lot for a few days  everything will have loaded and the lag is not so bad. It's mostly a bit annoying if I travel a lot from lot to lot, especially if visiting other hoods/worlds. I found that there is less lag if I stay within the hood. Must also add that my mods folder is about to explode, but this seems to affect the largest lots mainly. They just take much longer to load and there is a bit more lag.

It's fun to start a new game and see how well he game performs without all the history/memory(population of my 10 years old main save.

  • I posted a topic like this last month here. -->Maximum population in the save file before sim culling? | EA Forums - 4964511
(You don't have to read all, I just post for my reference. Your topic has more information now.)

My game has the auto-remove (culling) situation after the sim count is 615. And it happened after all of my active sims sleep.

    1. I searched a lot for information but I can't find a recent number of it. The most recent one I found is 800.
    2. It did! And my case was without notification. I knew it because I checked the "Other Household" category.

For more details when I face a culling situation

    • Family in the "My Household" category both active family and townies.is safe from removal.
    • Some of the removed families are "Secret Society (from DU EP)" who are homeless.
    • All stray pets were removed.
    • "Erwin Pries" from Strangervillie and a hidden sim is removed.

I disabled the removing progress with MCCC mod because I can't find another way to save them.

    ---

So, I am curious that your game starts the auto-removing too soon if it's around 300-400. What kind of their role? And did you have all of the packs or missing some packs? The game mechanic may be difference when have some packs enable.

Finally I have someone who shares the same issue as me! :)

Here is the summary of how i discovered this problem:

      1. I have the habit to delete random townies from time to time, usually after every 2-3 sim days.
      2. In my game, i have 385 sims under My Households.
      3. For sims under Other Households, there is no certain way to count them so i estimate to be around 200 to 300 sims there but definitely they are lower compared to the sims under My Households.
      4. Recently I found out that the random townies are not generated at all and that made me wonder why.
      5. Next, I also found out that the ghost dog Whitaker is also being removed from my game.
      6. I have also discovered that those community lot NPC can spawn but after I leave the lot and they will also be removed the next sim day.

I don't have an exact answer of how this happened but I have done two things to mitigate this problem:

      1. Removed a mod which adds more sims in a venue. It could be the culprit because it tweaks the number of sims.
      2. Added Neia No Culling Mod into my game.

Also, I don't use MCCC because it messed with my game once by adding more households into each empty home without my permission but can you tell me more on how it stops culling in your game?

Apart from that, I have all expansion packs, game pack (except Batuu), all stuff packs but I only own some kits.

There are many things I want to answer and discuss. My answer may be long but I will write clearly as I can.

1-3 - I assumed that your overall sims population (both my and other household) is around 600+. So, it's close to my game. We may have the same case.

4 - If you have all Expansion Pack which includes Get Famous. The game usually uses existing sims for some roles such as mixologist. There is the list of roles in EgonV2's thread --> EgonVM's Ultimate NPC Making Guide 2.0 | EA Forums - 4955205

5 - As I said, stray pets in "hidden household" and "other household" can be deleted. You have to move Captain Whitaker to "My Household" to avoid that.

6 - I don't have that case because I stop this progress with MCCC. (And I went back to back up file after found the deleting case)

        About things you have done

1 - This isn't 100% solution but it can avoid generating unnecessary sims to fill the world. However, how many people you allowed on a lot before? Mine is 30. (But I will reduce to default 20 soon until I play Highschool again)

2 - "No Culling Mod" is exactly the solution for this. You are safe now!

About MCCC, I can help with how to set the mod to avoid the issue you said, I will answer in the next reply.
