If we are to have open workplaces, I think that they should be limited to the part-time jobs, such as bookstore clerk, grocery store clerk, day-spa, and cemetary jobs that we currently have. I also think that a teen Sim could work as a barrista in a coffee house, the same as they used to be able to in the Sims 2.
But anything other than part-time should remain rabbithole. As for criminals and the military being open..well, both include the use of weapons in real life. I realize they're dumbed down in game currently, but the problem with having them become an open job is then you have to add some elements of "excitement" to make those careers interesting, and that begets adding violent activities, which then changes the whole tone of the game.
