I play generationally, so if a marriage doesn't work out I keep playing my heir sim, and the other moves out. The kids stay with my sim, but they will invite the other parent over sometimes, or they will go and meet up somewhere.
I have had a sim who got his uni girlfriend pregnant when they weren't living together, so I moved the girlfriend into a different household with the baby and let MCCC take over. My sim still visited his kid and had a relationship, but I wasn't in control of how the kid grew and what his traits were. They went on holiday together, with the kid being an uncontrollable part of the group - seemed like a good idea at the time, but the kid died from exhaustion :# Which ended that!
