No, you're not alone. I think we all want to only have good times for our sims and the game makes rainbows and unicorn style living easier than thunderstorms and nightmare style living. So we typically gravitate to the same things for each of our sims. That becomes cookie cutter and boring.
Try giving your sim a divorce. Give another an enemy. And get one fired. All of those negatives will keep the game fresh. It goes against what you want but will add the experience to you and depth to that sim.
Just don't force it, lead up to it without actually planning it. If you check out my §1,000,000 challenge thread, you'll notice that Aaron (my main sim) has been in a long-term live in relationship with Malcolm Landgraab. Malcolm changed so much over the course of the game but an evil upbringing becomes very ingrained.
Aaron is trying hard to make a million simoleons while still supporting Malcolm's materialistic personality (which replaced the evil trait). Everything was smooth sailing so far. Then, when Aaron made the one hundred thousand simoleon milestone, Malcolm had a secret meeting with his parents and they allowed him to move back home. There was only one catch, Nancy demanded that when Malcolm left Aaron, he had to prove himself loyal to the family by stealing all of Aaron's money.
This was way out of character for me but on par for a Landgraab. So now, Aaron doesn't trust people, his social need is always low and he's struggling with living in the nice house that he bought for Malcolm. His life is about to change drastically.
So make your story and remember that for every protagonist, there is an antagonist. Sometimes, that can even be the environment.
