So make your story and remember that for every protagonist, there is an antagonist. Sometimes, that can even be the environment.
I usually have about four saves, but let me tell you about one of them...
I was using the save mostly as a test and building area. There was a woman with a toddler as the active household, but I couldn't remember why I had started her, and I felt like doing a different, dastardly sort of game.
Ages ago, on this forum, someone mentioned having a game with someone who wanted to be a criminal mastermind. This criminal got the Evil trait, of course, but the trick was that he also had the Family Oriented trait.
So, in my game, I set this up and then it went off the rails really quickly. I gave the Criminal a teenage son, so Criminal is trying to raise the kid as his evil successor, but the teenager is also Erratic, so it isn't going well. So Criminal is doing all these nice interactions towards his son, but spamming all the evil and mischief interactions to everyone else he runs across, including the teenager's friends he brings home from school.
But remember that woman with the toddler? I needed some more money for rent, so I figured I'd move those two in. What could go wrong?
So... as soon as she moved in, I remembered why I'd created her. I wanted to test the active careers. Specifically, the detective career. Not only that, she's Good. As in the trait that's opposite of Evil.
So Criminal is trying to turn his son and adopted son towards lives of crime while also trying to woo the Detective. The Detective is trying to save the two kids and is rebuffing the Criminal's advances. (I tried to get the two adults together, but even with my intervention, they can't get the romantic interactions very high.) So no matter what happens, one of these parents is not going to get their way.
*I think what worked for me was having this all in a separate save, away from my generational play. That way I can just go wild. The Criminal can start fights, break up marriages, use Mischief to win that one competition in San Myshuno... and none of it affects my families that I've been playing for 5+ generations.
