I haven't had a sim go to the the Thrift Store quite yet but I was curious, if they buy an outfit, does it replace one of the 5 everyday outfits I already have made for my sim? If so, which one does it replace?
No, it doesn't replace an everyday outfit or any outfit. The outfit your sim buys there will be found in your sim's inventory (shopping bag icon) and you can have your sim wear it whenever you want it. Or sell it...
Though one annoying thing is that sims do sometimes automatically put it on, sometimes even when going to bed.

Mine also wore it in the shower. The outfits are atrocious though. And as far as I know you can’t see them before you buy them.

You can't see it before you buy it?? Thats a game flaw if I ever heard one.

Yep, unless there is something I don’t know about. I only had one sim purchase something there, and the outfit was atrocious. If you find a way to view them before purchasing them in game, please let me know. I know some simmer out there did go through and show each outfit. I believe it was on the forums, but I didn’t think any of them were worth purchasing. I seriously think that was a big design flaw myself, not being able to see them. It was almost as if it was an after thought, and they didn’t have time to finish the Trendi correctly.
There is definitely a way to curate/create your own thrift outfits. Then there is the seperate mechanic for purchasing ready made ones, which as noted the player cannot see beforehand but merely read a description.
I apologise that I can’t remember the exact interaction with the thrift store rack to do it as it’s been ages since I’ve done that in game. The correct option takes you to a special CAS and each item costs certain simoleons.
@SheriSim57 You are thinking of Trendi, not the thrift store lot (the pre-built one is called Thriftea).
At the thrift store lot you click on the clothing rack to create your outfit on a CAS mannequin.
Trendi is the app on the phone where outfits can be listed for sale. If you buy an outfit from Trendi, you can't see it beforehand, just the description.
However, forum user @Harukotyan created a thread with images of all the Trendi outfits here for anyone who wants to see them. https://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/comment/18161557

Yeah, I don’t know why they didn’t add a picture of the thrift store outfits and the Trendi outfits so you can see what oufit you are buying, or what outfit you are selling. If you play rotationally it’s too difficult to remember the outfits you create. I do think that was a very big flaw in HSY…. Also I wish they would allow you to use all the clothes at a sims disposal rather than just a few select pieces….I don’t feel like they designed the thrift shop or Trendi right.

Even if you don't play rotationally it can be difficult to remember what the outfits you have in your inventory look like when all you have is their name. They definitely didn't think the Trendi system too well. Also annoying is the fact that you can't edit them.

Well, I'll explain that one too then...
There are two places where you can buy outfits: that Thrift shop or through Trendi app (phone).
When you buy it from the Thrift store, you can put together up to 5 outfits at one time. However, do remember that the outfits will be gender neutral, so no gender tag will be applied and any sim can wear this outfit when sold.
When you buy it from Trendi app, you won't see the outfits. Only the name and its style. The outfit selection is randomly chosen from 30 pre-set outfits. Still, who can remember all of those. Not to mention you can't edit these outfits afterwards.
"Harukotyan;d-1002159" wrote: 2) Trendi outfits are not generated randomly. There's a set pool of 30 outfits each with it's own name. For the test purpose I've completely buy out Trendi stock 12 times. Three times a day for four days in a row. I wanted to see how many different outfits I will accumulate and if there's a random factor. All outfits and their rarity distribution are shown below under a spoiler. So far I didn't see any other ones appearing on the App. So I assume there are no more. Also when you are listing your outfits on Trendi they do not appear among 25 offered at any time.
