Build grocery stores now?

I heard in horse ranch there is now a general/grocery store? If that’s true does that mean we can build a general store or grocery market now? I haven’t purchased horse ranch, but I’m curious about this

Although there's no "grocery store" lot type, it is also very easy to make a retail lot and set food items for sale. I have a couple in my game, they work just fine.

They work fine but the downside is that you can't sell flour and sugar needed for the Simple Living lot trait. Those items have no physical object to set for sale. I have a store that sells all possible ingredients for herbalism and magical potions.

Okay, I just had to go back and test this again, because I thought maybe I was losing my memory. But no, in fact, you absolutely can sell flour and sugar in retail lots. Note: you can't buy them from build/buy to set for sale; you have to have them in your inventory and then drag them out to set them for sale.

Can be placed on counters/shelves and set for sale and can be sold in the upright retail cooler:

    Milk*
    Cheese*
    Milk Bread*
    Eggs*
    Sugar
    Flour
    Mayonnaise
    Custard
    All jams and preserves

(*Starred items can also be sold from the bakery shelves)

Can not be placed on counters/shelves and set for sale, but can be sold in the upright retail cooler:

    Wrapped white meat
    Wrapped red meat

And as always, you can set for sale the following pre-Cottage Living items:

    All fruits and vegetables
    Fish
    Honey
    Fizzy Juice
    Ice cream
    Baked items
    All cooked/prepared foods

I have not tested nectar yet, but assume it can be sold as well.

Ok, this is new for me. Where did I get the idea that this would not be possible? .. Thank you so much for showing this. :) I think my next few hours in game will be dedicated to building up a grocery store.

It's very possible that it wasn't an option when Cottage Living first released. I always try to remind myself now, when there are options or cross-pack functionality that seem to be missing on release, that it seems like they often go back and add those things (particularly when we comment on them on the forums), and it may not necessarily even show up in the patch notes.
  • By the way, what I don't remember (and have not tested again this time), is whether items can be restocked once the original item is sold. My best guess is: bakery shelves probably, counters maybe, upright retail cooler probably not.

I think you can buy indefinitely from the upright retail cooler. It's enough to add an item once and then it's always available for purchase.

Thanks! I use those, but don't usually pay much attention to them, I'm usually most focused on what's in the bakery shelves and keeping those restocked. Aside from bakeries, my main grocery store is my little takeaway shop in Henford that sells ingredients in one room, but also prepared meals from the bakery shelves in a little dining room area. It is extremely cute, if I do say so myself. :D
  • I don't have any grocery shops set up in game, I rely mainly on the delivery service and the various grocery stands. But I did set up some bakeries and ice cream shops. One of the ice cream shops has a fridge that I stocked with ice cream cones so the sims can buy and eat an ice cream on the go without having to sit down at the table. Speaking of grocery shops, I saw on the gallery some really beautiful grocery store mock-up rooms made with TOOL mod, wish it were easier for us to create our own grocery stores in game. The sales table is nice but selling apples by the piece is so annoying.
  • In my past Ancestral game save, I built a Trading Post. I'm so glad I came across this thread, though, as in this brand-new Ancestral game save, I will be better able to equip said Trading Post. Great pictures, wonderful ideas, I thank you all for sharing!

Will the meat spoil in the fridge? Will restocked meat be fresh again? Until now I only created a bakery and used the reward trait for the culinary career to make food that never spoils. But that's not possible for meat.

I've never had anything spoil in the fridge while it was set for sale. Besides, it gets renewed whenever it is restocked. And you would need to be on the lot for that many days anyway in order for things to start spoiling and that doesn't happen if you only go there for shopping. Most of my shops are real life years old and the food they sell is still fresh.

Same. I have things in my retail fridges that I probably put in at least 4 or 5 (real life) years ago that were still fine when I was doing my test yesterday.
