That could be it! Chickens have quite a big range for wandering so I think it's closer to that than a shed. The positive of being tied to an object is that they wont take a household slot.
Yes, I think that's why they went with the miniature goats and sheep rather than the full-sized regular ones. Little ones can function like chickens tied to an object but free to roam, whereas large ones might have to be locked to a shed like llamas and cows (maybe something to do with coding limitations?). Otherwise if they're not locked to an object then they would have to use up a household slot like horses?
