I have to buy an empty lot somewhere else as their home lot, but if you don't build anything on that home lot, there are no bills. Or, you could put just enough stuff to make your sim still owe "rent" for your apartment.

I never even thought of doing that. My sims own a vet clinic and travel there every day and then travel home again... - I really wish we could just have our sims officially live on their retail lots. All of my shop owners spend so much time at their retail stores, there's no point owning a house too. It ends up being a waste of a perfectly good lot that another family might like to own.
Or else, I wish they'd given us real apartment tools. In TS2, I used to build little 3x3 "apartments" for my business owners, or for sims that I wanted to permanently live in their vacation homes. It was like having a PO Box, so it wouldn't waste a whole lot somewhere. But they didn't give us real apartments in TS4. :( "Dannydanbo;c-16609097" wrote:
What's the point of living above your store if you still must own a lot? Why not just live on your lot. It seems an odd way to play and uses up precious few lots in an otherwise small world.

Try looking in the gallery at some of the retail lots posted there. A lot of builders will include small apartments on their retail lots."simmerlyrose;c-16612788" wrote:
