Castles were homes lords and barrons back many years ago and are always on a hill to give the army the advantage in battle to see the enemy approaching. As others have said they are a fortress and used to have the army guarding them and are pretty stereotypical game of thrones/medieval looking. Some in Germany and France can look very Disney like and a lot of the original fairytales are based on them which the Disney films are based on the original stories. Palaces were more from (1500s) onwards residence for the monarchy pre 1500s the bigger castles were usually used by monarchs and the more well known ones in my country were built around the 1700s. A manor or as they are also known if they are public attractions are stately homes. They are homes again to lords, barons and those of noble blood and own a lot of land that passes through generations. Most seem to be built from 1400 onwards and are basically a huge fancy home that in their heyday monarchs would visit and stay at depending on how high in court the owner is. I can only say from what I know from my own country and other countries in Europe from visiting them and that is my rough understanding of it. I didn’t realise I would ramble as much as I have done.
