Chestnut Ridge is not in the American Southwest
It gets cold and snows. So where is this supposed to be, more like the plains? Colorado?

Upper deserts can be very cold in the winter. The problem is that deserts don’t get much precipitation, that’s why you don’t see much snow. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t snow in the mountains around a dersert because if most certainly does in most cases, at least in the southwest. In the southwest you can find oceans, snowy mountains, deserts, and agricultural valleys within 25-100 or so miles of each other. I live in such an area in Southern California.
Mexicans are part Indian and part Spanish. When the Spanish came to the Americas most interbred with Indians. There are reservations around the Grand Canyon. In Arizona there are Rock mountains/ Plateaus with ancient homes built within the curve of the mountains to protect the Indians from the sun and heat part of the day. It’s Ingenious how they built homes there, they always inspire awe in me when we drive by them.
