For the style of the house, I try to be a bit different for each household, while sticking to a theme. As for the character's themselves, I actually go along the same line as @keenow and color-code their outfits. Sometimes keeping to a theme in a household too, but not rigidly. ;)

For example, I put together a collage of twin sisters here that I've completely redone their clothing just today.
Adrienne Goth; purple and yellow, Ashleigh Goth; red and black. It's in this order:
Everyday, Formal, Athletic, Party, Swimwear, Hot Weather, Cold Weather.
(I skipped sleepwear since it's very basic for all sims)
