I would like to create a pavilion in my Sims back yard but I've not figured out how to create rooms with invisible walls that I can place the roof on and just add columns to appear to support the roof...

Make the room normally, put the columns where you want them and whatever else you want and then the roof and then just knock down the walls. Easy peasy.
