Only good experiences. It really adds to the atmosphere if the college kids return to their families or go on trips together. Police Academy students get to dip into the detective career, archaeologists and related majors go to Selvadorada...
That said, I strictly curate my students: I only ever have the actually played household enrolled at uni (usually five students in a residential lot outside campus) and don't care about townies that may or may not graduate while my played sims live their lifes.
When you choose not to enroll immediately after the end of term, your sims will lose their scholarships, have to apply again and need to wait a day for the results, so keep that in mind when planning their schedule.
