Do pets breed autonomously?

Do pets in the Sims 4 breed autonomously? I'm currently playing the Lynx household and I received a notification very much to my surprise that Josie was going into labor. She gave birth to a black cat which looks nothing at all like Josie or any of the other cats that live in the Lynx household. It's taken my household up to the limit as they already had five cats living there. I've never noticed anything like this before in my game but usually I only have one or two pets at the most.

Thanks in advance for any replies.
  • Yes if they have the free spirit trait. I've had multiple cats return home pregnant.

edit to add that they will also autonomously mate if not spayed/neutered and they have a good relationship when the female is in heat, but I figured you would have seen the hearts/heard the sound effect for cats living in the home.

She does have the free spirit trait. I didn't notice when she got pregnant. She also has the prowler trait as well so I think it happened away from the home considering the kitten is completely black and none of the household cats are.

Thanks for your replies. I had no idea it could happen autonomously. The kitten is cute and will be taken care of. ;)
