Do you ever cheat a sim's skills for story/character reasons?

I've never done this, but I'm starting a new game and my main sim will be a late-60's hippy dude who I've imagined as a guitar-toting, VW bus driving, peace-loving, vagabond-type. I'm thinking that...

It can be done through the cheat console, although it's a bit more cumbersome.
