Do you ever cheat a sim's skills for story/character reasons?

I've never done this, but I'm starting a new game and my main sim will be a late-60's hippy dude who I've imagined as a guitar-toting, VW bus driving, peace-loving, vagabond-type. I'm thinking that...

I play on a really long lifespan, and I altered the skill gain rate. What I do is start with the default skill gain, then I flag my sims for skill gain change to slow down things when I feel is the right time. The only skill I cheat is photography.
