Does anyone know the point of the "Whisper Quiet" upgrade?

I never use that upgrade because I like the sounds of the washer/dryer/dishwashers. I'm assuming it just lowers the sound of the machines. I never considered it might be because of sleeping. So, I just tested this out in my game. I put a bed next to the washer and dryer (no Whisper Quiet upgrade), ran the laundry, and made my Sims sleep. They never woke up. I guess it's just an extra option if someone doesn't like the sounds.
