Hi, in reference to the last line in your third paragraph, this formal wear glitch has been around since My Weddings, I'm sorry to say. We can only hope it makes it to the Bug list. I only play one household and have for most of my gameplay with Sims 4. Can't allow my Rock Star to stop being a Global Superstar by not showing up to his own concerts and photoshoots, after all. I just scheduled a masked Grand Ball, set for a public venue, too. I'll either go ahead with it and just see what happens in my game, or I'll edit it, quickly. I left my family on Monday evening, the ball set for the next day . . .
GalacticGal Yes, the plethora of missed opportunities to use our Sims' own categorical outfits is a head scratcher. Random outfits in festivals, the Magic Realm, grand balls, weddings and other places just adds to my frustration, constantly. I love to design Sims and I choose their outfits carefully, with color palettes, styles and patterns that fit the Sim's intended personality. Random outfits just bork that all up.
I've been using MC Command Center extensively to change Sim outfits during gameplay, so thank goodness that exists at least, but I don't know why it's programmed this way in the first place. It just undoes the work we put into our Sims.
I think I'm going to report this on Discord for consideration for the next wave of autonomy tweaks. Thanks for your reply, even if I'm responding kind of late to it, lol.

They honestly need to unhide hidden outfit categories, especially career and event/festival/situational (or option to turn off (I personally use a mod to turn many of these off because, ugh!)), and instead of random have at least as default pack friendly/specific "styled looks" per type. That with allowing editing (as they are no longer hidden), would just save so much grief in the game.
And if we could create our own "styled looks", save, and even share on the gallery, then redressing sims would be so much easier for those who do like to redress sometimes.

I also hate to see random outfits that completely ruin the look of sims I care about. I can only recommend 'situationsoutfitsbegone by sims4me/Bienchen. It's such a relief to enter the magic realm without my sims being dressed completely against their character. Not sure about grand balls because I don't think she is buying recent packs but she is still updating mods.

I do use the Situation Outfits Begone for the Magic Realm specifically. I don't use the others though because I try to keep my mods to a minimum. She has some great mods, though.
