Dumb gardening question

I warned you this is a dumb question!

I want my sim to garden as a hobby so only about 4 plants at a time. Do the plants age and die like they did in TS3? So far they just keep going and going. He has over 100 mushrooms in his fridge. They won't eat that in 100 generations! I'd like him to grow some different things.

Also can you do anything with flowers? They just sit in his inventory right now because I can't figure out what to do with them.
  • I also use them as bait because my sim is living off of her natural products: garden, fishing, digging, beekeeping, etc.

Hello! You can eat the food you store in the fridge, either directly from inventory, like a snack, or by cooking a meal or cake etc. You must choose "cook..." and not "serve..." I think.

I often keep a few vegetables or fruits in my sim inventory - also good for feeding a toddler if you don't have the time to find food he better way. Their hunger will get a positive boost, but not enough to eliminate the real meal.

Crops can be used as fertilizer to increase the plant quality over time.

Cops can be used as bait when fishing. I didn't do this often, and I never studied what bait allures what fish, but I think there is a system for that...

I dl'ed a CC canning station allowing my sim to make sauces, jam and pickles from harvests. They can be eaten, gifted or sold. And the jars are often nice decorations o the kitchen shelf, too :) Just google canning station, not sure where I got it.

I think plants can have eternal life, but there are also certain risks they ca die. Naturally if neglected over time, I think I even had a plant die during a very freezing Winter, not 100% sure, but higher quality will also make plants stronger against temperature (normal plants did not give produce in Winter, while better quality plants of same specie did), pests and weeds etc.

Flowers can be used for Floral arrangements (requires Seasons). There also exists a few CC vases that allows you to put a couple flowers into the vase, for decor. I love it, because it gives my non-gardening sims a reason ti pick a few flowers, and it's fun trying to keep the flowers used relevant for the current season. Some flowers can also be used for decor simply by leaving them on a shelf, counter, dining table. It's okay for a change :) Flowers can also be gifted, I think Roses have something extra when gifted on Love day, not sure...

If garden gets too small, you can grow plants in planters indoors. Some flowers make for quite nice decor, methinks :)

PS: Even flowers can be fed to toddlers... muha, I could not believe my eyes when my little one actually ate a rose!

Adding: Many simmers grow plants to sell the harvest, but the plants themselves do increase in value too, and planting seeds and selling well grown plants can also make for good income. So if you want to grow something different, don't hesitate selling some modest plants.

No just take cuttings and graft them to plants to make 1 plant grow 3 different fruits veg.
And sell them for moolah ;)

    Blackberries are good for this.

Do they have to be plants of the same season or can you graft any season together?

@Stonedragon @Simmerville check the date on this thread. First post was in 2014!
