They will never ever be able to please everyone. Before, people complained it took too long (I did; I hated how long showering and eating took and I'm glad they nerfed it.) Now, people complain it's too short.
I don't have issues with socializing during family meals or dinner parties. My sims sit at the table and chat nonstop while eating their meals. If you are multitasking, then eating will be longer.
For family meals, set up the table beforehand. Instead of call to meal, use pick up serving and drag the plates from your inventory to the table. Then, have your sims sit at the table and eat and chat.
For dinner parties, I move the meals to the center of the table. I gather everyone into a group, then have the group sit at the table. While the group is chatting, I call to meal and they all grab a serving from the table and eat.
At least for me, eating together is still one of my main social activities for my family and friends. I personally do not think it's too short; I think it's perfect the way it is now.
