- One of the Sims' teen friends asked the dad who they didn't even know to be best friends. Ok, not as creepy as yours but I thought it was a bit much.

Slimy dude. :p - Same, you aren't able to control when an npc sends a flirty response and that's causing romance meters. If romantically exploring is set to yes in sexual orientation it will romance meter both genders if set to no it will only romance meter the selected gender if they're set to only being interested in one gender. That does help some but it doesn't prevent it.
Also non friend prom invites by an npc will create a positive or negative romance meter depending on your response there is no neutral which is annoying
It's overkill regardless but it can somewhat be tamed with sexual orientation set one gender and no in exploring
