Experimental food-no group meal option?

I put a chef's station in my family's home, and just tried to have one of the teen daughters cook an experimental dish for the family, but she was only able to make a single serving, which she ate herself. I thought it was just the way the chef station worked, but then saw that the other categories had group options. Is this a bug, or is that just how it is? Seems silly to learn the recipes then not be able to cook them for other sims.
