I use Free Real Estate whenever I am setting up a new Simworld, to put my Sim and their supporting cast into the homes I want them to have. I'm a terrible builder, so I don't build much; that eliminates my need for building cheats.
Like @manicobsessive, I use MCC and UI cheats to cut some corners. If I'm starting a game with an adult Sim as my main character, I might give them a couple points in a basic skill or two. It's hard for me to imagine a man or woman in their twenties who is a complete novice at everything. I'll give a supporting Sim the ability to sing or cook fairly well, or give them skills relevant to the career I want them to have. That makes townies seem more real and interesting than they'd otherwise be.
Sometimes I'll go into cas.fulleditmode to fix a Sim whose in-game appearance doesn't match what I envisioned when my daughter or I created them. One guy whom we intended to look a bit gangly looked emaciated when we saw him in action. Rather than have a man with Jack Skellington's build prancing around Newcrest, we put some meat on his bones through fulleditmode.
