Is my sim supposed to know WHERE to go to find gardening collectibles like lemon, sage, cherry, etc? I mean, obviously I can google and I can find where to go but is there a way for my sim to find...

You can go to the festivals if you have City Living. There is also a produce market stall during the flea market and on Wednesdays I think. Some seeds can be bought on the phone under purchase gifts. The road stall in Sulani and the magic realm has some seeds to buy.
