Freelance - Career breakdown?

I love the idea of working freelance. Some of my sims already worked from home, but establishing this as a career is so cool.

I watched the stream, but did not quite catch how these careers break into branches.

Writer can be either Marketing or Ghost writing.
Artist can be either Artist? or Graphics designer.
Programmer can be something including Security? I missed out on the two options.

Will each freelance career split at level 5, like many regular careers do? Or do we pick either branch from the start? I know there won't be traditional promotions, but there might still be some level system based on earnings or time spent?

Hm... anyone got more details?
  • I don't think it has actual branches, I think they meant that you can pick a "branch" based on what types of gigs you have your sims do. If you have a writer sim, you can choose to only have them do marketing gigs or they can only do ghost writing gigs, or they can choose a mixture of both. Same with the other two, kind of like with the acting career where you can choose to have your sim only do commercials, TV shows, movies, or a mixture.

Hm, would be cool if those Agents specializes by providing different gigs. Say Marketing or Ghost writing :)

They do. You join either the writing, programming, or painting agency and they provide you with all the gigs you can choose from in that field. Aside from that, however, it seems like it's up to you what your sim will specialize in.

  • Available gigs are determined by skill level -- so if you go through the existing traditional rabbit hole jobs, you'll likely wind up at the top level of the skill (unless you choose the eGamer branch of Tech Guru) so you'd have a wide range of gigs to choose from. Not sure if there are other skills you'll need, like in Acting where you need Guitar, Fitness or Charisma for certain gigs.

It didn't look like it. From what I saw in the livestream, sims only needed the skill associated with the career (writing, painting, or programming).

From what I've seen of the acting career, it seems to be based on skill level. Gigs for a higher skill level shouldn't come available until you are closer to that level.
For example, when my Sim was at probably around 3 handiness, level 7 and 9 gigs weren't available to her. I think it opens up the next possible level in said skill, giving you something to work on until the gig. After you reach that level, it opens up more gigs at the next level to achieve.

I haven't played much with the acting career, but this seems to be the pattern. I'm not even sure if this is what stilljustme2 was referring to, but this is what I think of when I think of the gigs being based on skill level.
  • Hey I need some help. Do any of you know whether it's more profitable to do gigs or publish books? Gigs are a huge chunk of change (if you get lucky and have level 10 ones available), however the rare instance where you have to edit twice and then they just delete the book drives me mad! Sending to literary magazine gives money over time, but do you know if it ends up being more or less than a level 10 gig? I'm used to the Sims 3 with massive royalties, but in 4 I'm only getting like $250 a day for a level 10 biography written while very inspired.

tldr; Will you make more money (in the long run) sending a Biography to the literary magazine, or doing a level 10 gig?
