"Well I better get home, tell me if you find out anything."
"I will, thanks for helping me." she said.
She kissed his cheek, he blushed a little, she really was the only girl that talked to him.
"Sure, I'll uh....see you then."
She waved as he walked across the street to get home, she wondered if Skip was okay, and only because of the messy bandage on the back of his head.
End Scene
*scene begins*
Geoffrey woke up with a start after hearing a call that was loudly made for another doctor over the intercom in the hallway, “MOTHER, DON’T LEAVE!” Breathing heavily and blinking the room into focus, Geoffrey realized he was still at the hospital in his office. “It…it was just a dream. Calm yourself.”, as pulled the post-it note off his cheek that he must’ve slept on. “Man, what time is it?”, he muttered as he glanced down at his watch to check the time. Thinking he only slept a few hours, he realized he was there all night and quickly got up from his desk chair, almost knocking it over, before he remembered what he was looking at last night. Going back to his computer he started to print out his findings. His mother had had another son after she left Geoffrey’s father when he was just a child. The article didn’t say who the other son was, but it was a start. Geoffrey had to know and felt determined to find out no matter what the cost. Rushing out of the hospital, hoping no one really noticed his unkempt appearance, Geoffrey made his way swiftly to his car.
Malcolm just made it across the street as his father pulled into the driveway. “What on earth were you doing over there at this hour, Malcolm?!”, noticing Malcolm’s disheveled appearance as well, “Did.. did you sleep over there?!” His father’s own appearance wasn’t lost on him as well as he gruffly replied, ”So? And where were you all night, Dad? Mom needed you.” Geoffrey let out a short bark of a laugh, “Oh, I’m sure she did…”, as he walked into the house with Malcolm behind him. “No, I’m serious, Dad. Something must’ve upset Mom yesterday ‘cause she passed out from drinking so much.” Despite their hurt and disagreements, Geoffrey still cared a great deal about Nancy. Turning quickly towards his son, “What?! Where is she? Is she all right, Malcolm?!”, gripping him by his shoulders. “Yeah, Dad. She’s fine. I helped her into bed and she fell asleep.” Sagging in relief, Geoffrey sighed, smiled tentatively to Malcolm as he made his way upstairs to his wife.
Nancy woke up still in the clothes she wore the day before and with a pounding headache from the all the juice cocktails and crying the night before. Grimacing from the horrid taste in her mouth, she got up and went into the bathroom seeing for the first time the aftermath of last night. Eyes puffy, dried streaks of mascara smeared everywhere, eye lashes clumped together from her tears drying, her mussed hair. Grimacing again, she undressed and took a much needed shower.
Walking out wearing her robe, she stopped short at the sight of Geoffrey sitting on the edge of the bed, “Geoffrey..what do you want? Here to finish our fight? Well, leave it. I’m in no mood..” Expecting him to argue back, Nancy was taken by surprise when he quickly left the bed and held her. “Oh, Nancy, I’m so sorry. Malcolm just told me what happened last night. I should’ve been here. We should’ve talked it out. I’m so sorry!” Her eyes started to tear up at her husband’s gentle words as she wrapped her arms around him. They stood there for a moment, just holding each other in silence.
Meanwhile…
Dustin stared out the window of the motel, watching the sun rays shine through the blinds. He hadn’t slept. He couldn’t sleep. Too many things running through his head, too many worries. He looked down at Beau sleeping next to him seeing the now familiar sight of dried tears at the corner of his eyes. Beau had cried in his sleep again. “Oh, what am I going to do, Mom? What would you have done in this situation?”, he thought as his own tears started to form. Getting up from the bed as quietly as he could, Dustin slipped outside, leaving the door open a crack so he could hear when Beau wakes up, and calls the Burbs to check on his youngest sibling. The Burbs were gracious enough to look after him over night when Dustin explained that he and Beau just needed some brother bonding time. After ending the call, Dustin leaned his head back against the wall and closed his eyes, breathing in much needed fresh air. He heard footsteps approach him, but ignored them figuring they were just another visitor going to their room. “Hey. Are you all right? You don’t look so good.” Dustin opened his eyes, “Why does that voice sound familiar? Where have I heard that voice?”, he thought as he looked over to the stranger standing there, key poised at the door a room over from his and Beau’s room. Dustin couldn’t see much of the guy’s face what with his sunglasses and ball cap on. He could barely see blonde hair peeking from under the cap and he was about Dustin’s height and build. “Yeah, yeah. I’m all right. Thanks.” The stranger smiled, lowering his hand holding the key, “No problem. Just thought I’d check.”
“Are you from around here? You seem familiar.”
“Oh no. I live about a few hours outside of town. Just here visiting. And it’s funny that you should say that, though. A few people have said I seem familiar to them, too.”
“Huh.”
Holding his hand out to Dustin, “Oh, forgive my manners. My name’s Johnny.”
"Oh, Dustin.”, he said shaking his hand.
