In the game it's not attend school when focused, it's attend school when energized. Maybe they changed it after the guide was made, I don't know. But it's definitely energized now.
Also, the information needed for getting to the next level (in school or at work) are always listed in the work section of the UI. It tells you exactly what you need to do to get the next promotion/grade level.
