Ghosts - is there a way to affect their behavior?

I never played much with ghosts, but in a few homes I left an ancestor's grave, allowing the ghost to haunt them. I know ghosts disappear if not given attention, so in most cases the haunting will last for so and so long.

But - it is a bit of a turnoff that (most?) ghosts keep breaking plumbing etc. In one house the ghost cause damages for a couple thousand simoleons every single night, the owners can't afford replacing all those broken sinks and toilets. I don't really get why a dead spouse, who also sit down talking friendly with the widow, will go breaking all those objects, causing her big problems. I'd like such a behavior If they were enemies in life, but not when they were lovers?

Basically, I'm asking if there anything the live household members can do to change the ghost's behavior? Is it based on traits and not possible to train a ghost? Will an even stronger friendship (than spouse, which is normally quite good already) solve anything? How can a ghost be pleased except mourning the grave? Must they mourn at the grave for hours every day to keep their toilets unbroken?

Please share - I'm about to become desperate...

  • There is really no way to train them or ask them not to break items. You can ask them to join the household as a ghost if you want to fully control them. They are actually fun to play at times. They do have all the same needs as a living sim, so they will need a bed and they will raid the fridge once in awhile (I make mine live in a basement room). You can direct them to haunt items (which will break plumbing), scare sims etc. On the plus side is they can ghostly repair broken items. They'll zip into the broken item, make it float for a bit, and the item will be repaired when they are done.
On the flip side, just designate a "cemetary"lot (I use the generic lot trait) and plop good old dead hubby's urn there. Have his widow visit on occasion.
  • Thanks. I m ight play a ghost sometime, but not as part of my regular rotation where the 8 sims limit often is a problem. I'll give it some time to see if the ghost might calm down a bit, at least not visiting every night. If not, I'll just release the spirit and move the grave stone to one of my many cemeteries. I normally have one of those in each world, but often just on the outskirt of any community lot. It can be fun when a ghost say enters the nightclub or restaurant to scare the crew and guests :) I normally send off those spirits, though.
