Not sure what has changed since the last patch update but I used to send my 5 star actor to the awards on Sunday even if he wasn't nominated and oftentimes he would end up winning anyway - if I had waited for his nomination it may not have ever happened but he ended up winning at least 3 of them until I lost interest in going/got busy with other activities on Sunday nights.
I hear you. One time my Sim didn't have a pending nomination, but he went down to the Show anyway, since his fiancée begged him not to be
that kind of celebrity. He needed to go to support his friends. And, lo and behold, he won. No category whatsoever was given, so I decided when I wrote it up that it was for Best New Artist. Seemed to fit. :)
