That's a great idea. Another way to have a Sim be homeless is to have generic or other public lots in your world where your homeless Sim can sleep, eat, have showers, use the bathroom.
Showers are available in spas or sports centres, bathrooms are available in all public lots, grills can be found in parks. As for sleeping, an alternative to couch surfing or using a tent is to have public lots in your world that have a bed in them. For example, my inn/pub has a couple of bedrooms on the upper floor (since originally they would provide travellers not just with refreshment but also a place where to spend the night). But since "inn" is not really a recognised type of lot in the game, the result is that any sims can sleep there for free... and for limitless time (unlike a rental lot). I also added two small bed rooms on the upper floor of the Blue Velvet nightclub for, ahem, couples (it's kind of a seedy place in my game :D ) so I guess a homeless Sim could spend the night there. As long as the bed is unoccupied.
