How do you guys do it if you want to level up multiple skills for a sim?

I have sent many sims to uni and in my experience, you only need certain skills to level level 3 to qualify for distinguished degrees and if you use the research machine - you get two skills at one - whatever skill you are researching that the research skill itself which really helps with uni.
