In Sims 4 I usually have no more than 3 generations, but the second generations is always expanding usually because one of the founder is turned into a vampire and when their spouse died, I marry them with another and they have new children, I picked the heir based on my favorite(the one that I mostly control and/or have the look that is closest to the vampire parent)
