Most of my sims just elope, the last ones right in front of the police station's reception desk (my unmarried police co-workers live in a residential lot that is a copy of the ingame one). In my game engagements are the big event for which I plan the location, the outfits and the background sims meticulously. The aforementioned officer proposed to his sweetheart at the summit of Mt. Komorebi, for example.
My sims tend do take the surname of the one higher up on the social ladder or they keep their old names.
