I usually check the sim's traits and see if there's any trait that makes them enjoy some specific activity more. For example music lovers have more fun listening to music or playing instruments...for love the outdoors's sims i make them do something outdoors...
But my sims almost always have pets and socializing a little bit with pets makes the fun bar go up in a bit.
