How do you solve a problem like Maria (the alien NPC)?

Sul sul, everybody.

Since we added Get to Work to our Sims library, we are finding aliens in disguise everywhere we go!

Today Z and I began a new game with a Sim in Henford-on-Bagley. He's not a scientist; he's a freelance writer. On his third night of existence, we sent him to a cafe in Windenburg. He got tired a few minutes before 11:00 PM, so we sent him back home.

The moment the game screen finished loading for his home lot, he was abducted!!

This Sim has only left Henford-on-Bagley once--the trip he made right before his abduction, so it's not like he was saying "Hey, aliens! Come and get me!" We know some of you would LOVE to have your Sims abducted, and will basically set them up to be swept away. We really didn't want to deal with that event this time around. How's that for luck?

We paused the game while he was in the alien spacecraft and used CAS to check out all the Sims on his contact list. Three of them were, in fact, disguised aliens: Maria, Jennie, and Robert, all of whom he'd chatted with around the HoB. All we can figure is that one of those conversations set up the abduction.

Then we did the same thing with three other saves. There are a bunch of aliens among those Sims' acquaintances, too.

It might be fun to mess with the aliens sometimes, but there are other times when we'd rather simply not do so. There doesn't seem to be a way to toggle aliens on and off. Is there a way to "catch" the aliens and make them ordinary human NPCs? Z would happily edit them in CAS.

  • If you have MCCC you can change them to human, but it's pointless because the game will just generate more. And I agree, toggles for occults would be very welcome. Hopefully they add that feature to Sims 5.
  • I really, really wish you could toggle off aliens. I have studiously avoided buying occult game packs, but Get to Work has...well, work stuff, which was the reason I bought it. Aliens were an unwelcome addition!

I only had the aliens attempt to abduct one of my sims once—used the resetsim cheat and stopped the abduction in its tracks. Whenever my sims get a moodlet from encountering a disguised alien, I go into Manage Households, find the offending extra-terrestrial, and edit their disguise to look the same as their regular-alien form so they can't fool anyone. If I kill them off, they'll just be replaced by a new disguised alien, and that won't solve the problem.

My sims, meanwhile, simply avoid socializing with aliens once they're outed. In my simworld's canon, "blueskins" are treated as a despised ethnic group, like the "untouchable" caste in traditional Hindu society or Blacks in the Jim Crow South. Which is...highly problematic by real-world moral standards, but unlike the real-world ethnic groups who had no say in their situation, the aliens abduct people and impregnate them against their will and disguise themselves to infiltrate human society. They deserve what they get.

I have only had 3 to 4 abductions since 2014, and no alien pregnancies from them. You might want to avoid alien night at the bar, I can’t remember what night it is, but you can look it up. I don’t play aliens, but I do have 2 scientists.

You can tell if a sim is an alien if they're in disguise because they glow around the edges. But can you out an alien?

Not strictly in-universe, but when the game lets you know that a sim is an alien, you can make it a lot more obvious by using CAS.

@calaprfy unfortunately the aliens only glow when they have a strong emotional state. You can prompt them to glow by using emotional enhancers in a crowd though, such as florist’s flower arrangements or other emotional aura items (or vampire skills if you’re that way inclined)
  • @SheriSim57 I bought Get to Work on Tuesday, I haven't given a Sim the Scientist career. I've had a Doctor, though...but he's not the one who was abducted.

And, wouldn't you know...the abducted Sim is now pregnant!

Thank you for the tip about Alien Night. It turns out the poor fellow probably did stumble into the Gnome's Arms during Alien Night. He was there looking for someone who was awaiting a package. I thought he got out of there before the event began--he was probably safely in the South Square Cafe by 8:00--but Z thinks at least two of the aliens our Sim met were at the Gnome's Arms with him.

@calaprfy The abduction did indeed happen on a Tuesday night. And since the bar events don't begin until 8:00, we didn't see the popup notification about Alien Night--our hapless Sim left the bar before then. Apparently a few of the honored guests showed up early.

I would want a Scientist Sim to investigate some alien life forms. At least, it makes a lot of sense for them to do so. And, if you investigate them, the odds of an abduction ought to be decent. After all, if you mess with the bull, you get the horns.

This time, however, it's my aspiring novelist who is the only pregnant man in Henford-on-Bagley.

@ACruelButLovingGod @RySBI I don't recall seeing any of the disguised aliens glowing. They must not have been Very Happy, or Very Playful, or Very Anything. We generally enjoy interacting with game-generated townies, though, so steering clear of them because they might be aliens won't be much fun.

Thank you for all the comments. We've thought about dragging the folder that has the Get to Work files to the desktop and only using it when we want a Sim to follow a GTW career, or when we think an alien storyline would be fun.
