I like giving one reward trait at Young Adult birthday based on the events of the sim's childhood, one reward trait at Adult birthday based on the events of the sim's young adulthood, and the Observant trait at Elder. I never use the potions. I've thought about one Potion of Youth partway through university, but that makes things complicated for the rest of the household/households.
