How does Romantic Relationship Preference get made?

I wanna know how it's formed in this game. Is whoever they flirt with or is if whoever they woohoo first? I wanted make a gay slutty man, yet he might be straight cause I had him sleep with a femal...

I think the preference will be set as your sims sucessfully flirt with the intended gender of your choice, everything will be autonomous later on.
