How does Romantic Relationship Preference get made?

I wanna know how it's formed in this game. Is whoever they flirt with or is if whoever they woohoo first? I wanted make a gay slutty man, yet he might be straight cause I had him sleep with a femal...

Interesting! My male sim met Jade at a nightclub. I wasn't planning on him having a romantic relationship, but they really hit it off. Their friendship and flirty meters raised quicker than any others Sims in my game. I don't have any mods.
