You don't mention if you use mods, but MCCC helps a lot with rotational play. When you switch to another household, you will certainly encounter your other played sims in the world. MCCC will allow you to do some remote actions on those sims when you are not playing them such as social interactions, changing outfits etc.
If you plan to visit a played sims household from another household's perspective, then I would recommend you get the Always Welcome trait, so you can cook, sleep, etc when visiting.
When you are visiting another sim's household the AI can be a bit wonky with them not going to bed etc. LittleMissSam's Send to Bed mod is superb for this. You can set bedtime routines with it and sims will stick to it.
