How does the sneak out window actually work?

My friend asked me to please build her a house in Moonwood Mill but she wants the teen's bedroom to have one of those sneak out windows. I build the lot and I always playtest my lots before uploading them and the teen never wanted to use the window to get out, even when I placed a bench and microscope outside her window, I would have her stand right at the window and direct her to it and she would just walk all the way down to the first floor, out the door and then climb up the lattice to go the microscope or bench. There is only a lock for option on the window if I click on it. For those of you who use it, how does it actually work?
For me to get it to work for the playtest I had to lock my teen inside her bedroom and then she happily used the window to get in and out as you can see in these pics ;)

My friend wanted the house uploaded as it is now, but I would love to know what the correct way is to use the sneak out window, does it have to be past a certain time? Please any advice would be greatly appreciated :)
