How far away should I sit from the fire (so I don't die)?

I'm making an indoor firepit (yes, it can be done without burning the house down). I did this before, but I put the chairs too close to the pit and people started catching on fire. Does anyone know th...

@DeKay You just take the fire pit that normally goes on a campground and stick it inside. I had one for my dark ages house, and now I’m putting one in a modern temple for a religion I’m creating which worships The Watcher, Fire, and cats, haha.
