I definitely recommend giving their new save file a try! I am in looooooooooove with it. as the OP said very happy all of the families have their own backstories some of them even own restaurants.
I haven't played with the families much rather I started my own family within the save file and my sims are going around getting to meet all of the new neighbors and learn about them. Also getting a peek into their houses and seeing their pets. So cute!
