I just read your story and that's pretty awesome. When I have these things happen with my sims and I want to protect them and have them find happiness. It's funny I want to see the drama around my played sims but not have it happen as much too them. It would be hard for me to continue to see this in my game play even though reading it .. it's very dramatic and involved (and fun) if that makes sense.
For me I'd just have to chose.. as in they couldn't go out in public together or if they did I'd police it tightly to steer them away from problems. It can be fun for awhile to plan out strategy ... but it can also get old. When working it from that angle... if it didn't work I'd have to give up on it.
I'm not fond of jealousy in my played families for the most part... it's fun to watch it happen to other sims outside of my played families though so I don't like to disable it in the game with mods.
I'd consider getting them both the player trait or even cheating it in, or rolling with the drama. You did say that Leila's fits meant she cared (not that I would go for that reasoning personally but our characters aren't us). I have read there might be something wrong with the player trait though... not that I've tested it out for awhile.
