How many police co-workers do I need?

At the GTW police station there are certain roles to fill: Chief, Lab technician, Assisstant, Reception worker and, I think, Officer and Detective.

What career level and what skills are needed when the game decides which sim to use for what role?

I'm asking because I have more sims in the police career than there are roles to be filled at the station, so in theory the game should have enough sims to choose from. But even so it sometimes still uses or even newly generates townies. That's why I think that the sims in my pool have the wrong career levels (too high or too low for certain roles) and/or the wrong skills.

I also noticed that some of the co-workers get swapped out after traveling back from a crime scene while others stay the same. So having a large pool of police sims to choose from isn't a bad idea.

If there's a table somewhere that lists the slots and requirements, I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.

  • I downloaded a Sim from the gallery listed as a Doctor, gave him a makeover, and added him to the doctor's career track. I think his actual career track level in my game is Medical Technologist. He was always appearing as the Doctor delivering the baby, except on one day he worked as the Receptionist lol and a few times he didn't show up to work and was replaced by a townie. I thought he was maybe designed or modded to replace the doctor, but I guess he was just randomly getting the job? I have other Sims with higher skills than him. My Medical Specialist Sim, which is a higher level than the doctor, has never appeared until recently when I started seeing her on the lot as a nurse. I was hoping if I level them both up to Surgeon they will be the only two Sims delivering babies in my game, but now I'm not so sure...
  • I've seen that, too, sometimes my detectives walk around in beat cop uniform and sometimes they even have receptionist duty. Funnily enough, this doesn't bother me too much. My cops can be a rather unruly bunch sometimes, so I just make believe they got a displinary measure (again).

But come to think of it, not just the chief seems to be fixed, but also the lab technician. Looking back, I can remember exactly one time when the game used one of my sims for lab worker: Daniel, when he was below (or equal to) rank three. Now that he has "outgrown" the lab, I see him more often at the receptionist station, if he comes in at all. I have another recruit ready to join today, I guess I'll give her the job and then switch to one of my detectives to see if the new one goes on lab duty. (But even if she does, it's most likely just conformation bias).

lol I don't mind either, I just pretend too, that the receptionist called in sick and such a good doctor to help out and check in his clinic's patients lol. If the person is there doing something else, I just pretend that they're training for a higher position while someone fills in for them. I'm very easy to please, because if something unexpected happens in the game I just make it right with my own imagination ;)
  • That's definitely a large part of what makes the sims fun for me, too, but only when my own sims are involved. Like the two new recruits I put into the career today. I want to watch my experienced officers guide them through their baby steps, not some randomly generated placeholders.
